The Future of Agriculture
Many people pessimistic about the future of agriculture and food security in Indonesia. With the failure of various misadventures associated kebijkanpembangunan increase the degree of farmers, agricultural world as if waiting for death knell.
The problems of agricultural development is very complex and interrelated. Inappropriate policies will result in very serious and can aggravate the condition so that farmers will be more suffering anymore.
Considering the wealth of resources both physical and human we can actually quite optimistic toward the resurrection and the triumph of agriculture which will ultimately bring improved living standard of the main actor is the farmer.
The most fundamental is the commitment and goodwill of all components of the nation to restore the momentum of agricultural development as a driver of the nation’s economy. Political will and the partisanship of state and politicians become one of the determinants of agricultural revival.
Food and problem
In the context of general agricultural development Indonesia has tremendous potential. Palm oil, rubber, and cocoa dominate the market we started to move the world. However, in the context of food production there is a uniqueness.
Indonesia is the world’s third largest rice producer after China and India. Indonesia’s contribution to world rice production by 8.5 percent or 51 million tonnes (Rice Almanac, 2002). China and India as major producers of rice contributes 54 percent. Vietnam and Thailand, traditionally an exporter of rice contributes only 54 and 3.9 percent.
The mean of Indonesia’s rice production 4.3 tons / hectare. Productivity is already beyond India, Thailand, and Vietnam. Although still below the productivity of Japan and China (average of over 6 tonnes / ha).
Then, why Indonesia almost every year have always faced repeated problems with food production. Mainly the rice?
